Who we are – The La Maestra Family Medicine Residency Program
The La Maestra Circle of Care®
At La Maestra, residents train within the La Maestra Circle of Care® services — an integrated model of care that brings medical, dental, mental health, and social services together to address patient overall health and wellness. During their rotations and continuity clinics, residents collaborate closely with teams outside family medicine gaining firsthand experience in how housing, food security, and other support systems affect patient health. This holistic, team-based approach not only strengthens clinical skills but also deepens residents’ understanding of whole-person care — an invaluable opportunity in residency training.FQHC as a training ground
The La Maestra Family Medicine Residency Program is based at La Maestra’s main clinic site in City Heights located in the urban and central region of San Diego County, California. As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), La Maestra serves as a safety net and a training ground for all residents. San Diego County is unique in that there are no public hospital systems in the region. Thus, low-income and under-resourced patients depend on FQHC for their primary care, specialty care, and social services. La Maestra provides high-quality, compassionate care to more than 45,000 patients annually with 89 percent of patients living at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level.
